Photographs from the 1960s
According to Mike Silpa, who submitted this wonderful sketch, "This rendering of the Wolverton shower house was done by Dick "Shorty" Beach in either 1965 or 1966. Using the most primitive of materials [charcoal on butcher paper], he captured the essence of Camp Wolverton - untidy and lush with forest vegetation." I [Peter] remember being in Camp, as a scout, when Shorty was doing the sketch. He was quite popular as a staffman [I think it was the lederhosen and the green alpine hat as well as his sense of humor and his wide knowledge of Sierran natural history] and a bunch of us scouts gathered around as he sketched. I remember him almost doing the whole thing in a flash. That same week he was working on a watercolor of the lodge which for many years hung in the scout service center on Palms Blvd. Anybody know what happened to it? Mike Robbins had a larger version of this shower house sketch made. This was in the years when he and Louise first started having their winter staff reunion/get-togethers at their house. I still have my copy hanging downstairs in my shop.
Frank Glick got these 1964 photos from a camper and they show a lot of interesting things. All those trees, for one thing. Camp sure was dark in those days! The dog for another. And what about the fence around the campfire circle and what are those big tall tents where staff hill is today? Then, there are all those large propane tanks. According to Rich Stowell, "Until 1964 the kitchen used propane cylinders that we exchanged at Stoney Creek. The big white tank was brought in 1964" [and was replaced around 2001]. In the background you can see the top of the large tank which supplied propane to the kitchen.
These photos are from 1966 when Peter Stekel's Troop 68 went to Wolverton. Our packer was Jim Irwin. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
